Android phones outsell iPhone
“RIM’s devices accounted for 36 per cent of the US smartphone market in the first quarter of this year, says NPD Group, followed by Android-based phones with 28 per cent, and Apple’s iPhone with 21 per cent.”
And this, right here, is the only reason why I still think it is possible for a Verizon iPhone to be coming this year. Apple doesn’t want to be in third place. And they especially don’t want to be behind Google.
I maintain that Apple does not want to do a CDMA phone and then be locked into supporting it for the next 2 years (minimum) when It’s likely that in the next 10-12 months Verizon will be switched over to LTE for most of their network. LTE being the same 4G technology that ATT is moving towards. It is far more appealing for Apple to make one phone running on LTE and sell it for Verizon and ATT rather than building two versions (GSM and a CDMA) of the same phone.
That said, Apple want’s to be the market leader in mobile. And putting a phone on Verizon allows them to sell phones to 70 million more people so even though I firmly believe my above paragraph, I will not be surprised by a Verizon iPhone. I’ll be even less surprised now that Android is outselling iPhone.
